Edward Ray Howerton

February 1, 1947 ~ February 28, 2019 (age 72)


Ed Howerton of Rutledge, passed away February 28, 2019, at his home. He was born February 1, 1947. He was saved at an early age at Lakeshore Baptist Church. He enjoyed teaching Sunday School for over 25 years. He faithfully attended Central Point Baptist Church.

Ed graduated from Rutledge High School in 1965. He was an alumnus of Hiwassee College and earned both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree from the University of Tennessee. He served as the Claiborne County High School agriculture teacher and Tazewell Future Farmers of America advisor for 32 years. After retirement from teaching, he continued to be active in education as a substitute teacher in Grainger County. Throughout his life, Ed was a devoted farmer of dairy cattle, beef cattle, forages, and tobacco.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Annette Howerton, and a brother Richard Hugh Howerton.

He is survived by wife of 44 years Gale Howerton; sons Steven (Jeni) Howerton, and Chris Howerton; grandchildren Ezekiel and Lacy-Caroline Howerton, all of Rutledge; his brother Ken (Claudette) Howerton of Elizabethton; and sister-in-law Geneva Howerton of Dandridge.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Saturday, March 2, 2019, at Smith-Reagan Funeral Home with funeral services to follow. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, March 3, 2019, at Helton Cemetery on Helton Rd. Revs. Mark Kitts and Earl Cummings will officiate the services.
