David E. “Popeye” Tate, age 92, of Rutledge, TN passed away on July 26, 2021. He was a member of Shiloh Methodist Church and attended regularly. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the Korean War and retired from American Enka after 40 years of service. At his retirement, he was supervisor of the carpenter shop and continued his love of woodworking in making swings and gliders which many neighbors and friends still enjoy. “Popeye” started playing sports at a young age and enjoyed it throughout his life. He was instrumental in getting football started for elementary students in Grainger County, and always made sure that any child who wanted to play had the opportunity and transportation to the games. It was his joy to watch his sons participate in sports and in later years could be found watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren on the baseball field, softball field and basketball court. For 40 years he enjoyed hunting trips to Montana with family and friends.
