Osco Kermit Jackson passed away peacefully on March 10, 2022 at the age of 93.  He was surrounded by his family, at home, in Washburn, Tennessee.

His battle with mobility issues that he fought for 65+ years showed his courage, determination, strength, grit, and downright stubbornness.  Kermit was a member of Rutledge Baptist Church where he attended, served on many committees, enjoyed good food, and “chewed the fat” with the best Sunday school class ever!  If only they could have solved the problems of the world, they would have…...Doc Hill, Doug Smith, Ernie Roberts, and the gang.

Kermit graduated from Rutledge High School.  He often reminisced of his classmates and shared memories with his family; especially in his last few weeks of life.

After being stationed in New York, where he served as Second Lieutenant, Transportation Corps, U.S. Army, he returned home to help his father on the farm.

Kermit was a graduate of the University of Tennessee.  He received his BS in Agriculture Science (of course).  During his years at UT, Kermit lived on the Ag campus, where he worked with the dairy cattle to help defray the cost of room and board.

Kermit’s first job after graduation was as a sales rep for a large dairy company.  He traveled from Tennessee through North Carolina.  One of his favorite cities was Raleigh.  It was near there that he met his wife of 64 years, Lois Romaine Thigpen Jackson.

After marriage, his postal career began.  He “scattered the mail” as a rural postal carrier in Rutledge for many years.  They practically had to make him retire!  Kermit made many good friends along the mail routes through the years and many were kids.  Of course, he has been known to give out a piece or two of chewing gum or candy along the way….

Of course, if you knew Kermit you know he was a farmer at heart.  Forever and always a farmer.  If you wanted to know anything about a cow, what to feed them, how much medicine to give them, or grain to mix, you did not ever wonder who to ask!  Just look for that old beat up white Chevy truck to pull into Jessie’s Market or call him on his cell (hope he wasn’t driving).  He was always happy to advise and then some.

Kermit Jackson had a passion for life!  He loved a nip of good liquor, a chew of tasty tobacco, and a beautiful woman!  Oh how he loved to flirt with the ladies (bless the nurses heart!) but appreciated their kindness just as much.

To say O.K. was “thrifty” was an understatement.  Just ask anyone who has ever tried to work on his truck or tractors and I am sure they would be quick to tell you that thrifty would not begin to cover it!  HA!

He made many good friends in his 93 years; farming buddies, fishing buddies, cattle buddies.  There are far too many to mention, but friendship was important to Kermit.

Kermit loved his family!  His daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren were his sunshine.  We can only hope that only some of his great strength and determination are among traits that he instilled in us.  Of course, the least of which would be his million dollar smile!

Kermit was preceded in death by his father, Hon Ellis Carter Jackson; mother, Elsie Davidson Jackson; and granddaughter, Alexandria Denise Johnson.

He is survived by his wife, Lois T. Jackson; daughter, Elsie “Doodle” Johnson; son-in-law, Dennis Johnson; granddaughter, Jasmine Denae Johnson; grandson, Jackson Boyd Johnson; sisters, Mrs. Hugh R. (Jean) Noe, Mrs. G.B. (Gaynelle) Hendrickson; brother, Gary “Dupie” Jackson.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 12, 2022 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Smith Reagan Funeral Home.  Graveside services will be Sunday, March 13, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Grainger Memorial Gardens.
